Ain’t love grand? They say it makes the world go ‘round, and certainly the word itself has become ubiquitous in our culture. We use the word for everything that brings us joy: we “love” our pets, pistachio ice cream, walks on the beach, and our significant other. We love them all.
Today is the day we set aside to give honor to love, especially that love we have for one another.
There’s something about expressing our love that is powerful:
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Sometimes we seek more than words to express our love. But what can manifest love sufficiently? Will flowers or chocolate suffice? Is there an ultimate display of love? It has been said, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for another.” Such a love can only be described as Divine. It’s good to be so loved.
